Melanie Drew thinks of herself as a quiet ceramic artist who lives deep in an enchanted forest. But, often comes up from the creek to share her love for creating with students at her Blue Heron Art Studio in Carrollton , Ga. Ms. Drew’s claywork currently blends modern technology with the ancient decorating techniques of sgraffito (carving through layers of colored slip to expose the contrasting color of the clay underneath) and mishima (filling delicately incised lines in the clay with colored slip ) . Whether staining the clay with creek mud, imprinting leaves or other found objects , or carving images of the creatures that surround her, Melanie imbues her respect of the natural world in everything she makes.
